BIS hosts Cure for Cancer event

The giving spirit was on full display at Bellefontaine Intermediate School earlier this month.

BIS students and staff hosted their annual Cure for Cancer event.

The large carnival-style celebration focused on supporting cancer awareness.

For 20 years, we have proudly raised money to support those battling cancer. Our co-chairs, Jon Reminder, Lori Horn, and Tammy Overholser, have been leading this effort since the beginning, with Tyler Johnson and Maureen Mifsud joining the team over the past 11 years.

Bellefontaine Intermediate School Assistant Principal Erin Gillig understands how important this cause is to all of us and has always supported our mission of giving back to the community with a full heart, and for that we are truly grateful.

We began our journey supporting Relay for Life, but in 2014, our own Nurse Nancy Harmon approached us with the idea of keeping our efforts local. It was a no-brainer – we knew it was time to make a change. Since then, we have focused on supporting members of our own community and helping local families during some of their most difficult times. We never imagined that one day we would also be honoring Nancy for her huge legacy (she passed in 2018).

Angie Miranda and Juanita Buffkin & family run a concession stand and have donated 100% back to us since about 2014. We truly appreciate them.

Our goal has always been to help students understand that if someone they love is facing this journey, they are not alone. Together, we can make a difference.

Over the years, we have supported the Logan County Cancer Society along with many individuals in our community, including our own Nurse Nancy Harmon, Scott Maier, Kylie Eaton, Wayne Fahnestock, Heather Rister, Thane Admire, Lori Horn – our co-chair, Ema Martinez, and Nurse Katie Buffkin. In addition, we have donated more than $21,000 to the Logan County Cancer Society to continue helping others while also supporting members of our own school family. This year we have raised $5,645.25 to give back to our community.

We are incredibly proud to support our community while teaching our students that we stand beside them every step of the way.
