Alumni Spotlight:

In this week's Alumni Spotlight, we're catching up with alumna Stefanie (Rene) Salyer

Stephanie (Rene) Salyer Alumni Spotlight

What are you doing now?

I am a current Ph.D. student in Special Education with a focus on Applied Behavior Analysis at Penn State University. I’ve spent my career supporting students with disabilities, both as a K–12 intervention specialist and a college-level tutor for education courses. I currently work as a clinical student teacher supervisor and am active in several professional organizations, focusing on trauma-informed care, behavior support, and social-emotional learning. I’ve been fortunate enough to present at national conferences, publish in education blogs, and serve on leadership committees that promote equity and inclusion in education. My work is driven by a deep belief that all students deserve compassion, structure, and opportunities to succeed. Outside of academics and professional life, I’m lucky to be surrounded by a supportive circle of friends and loved ones. I have been married to my best friend for eight years. We are very fortunate to have a shared passion for education and are currently in school together for our doctorate degrees.

How did BCS prepare you for this role?

BHS helped shape the foundation for who I am today. It gave me opportunities to explore leadership, connect with supportive teachers, and discover my passion for helping others. The encouragement I received, both academically and personally, gave me the confidence to pursue a career in special education and behavior analysis. Looking back, it was the relationships and expectations at school that taught me resilience, curiosity, and the value of showing up for others. These are all skills that I rely on every day in my work with students and future educators.

What is your advice for current Chieftains?

Remember that growth isn’t always a straight line. Ask questions, take risks, and don’t measure your worth by anyone else’s timeline. The challenges you face now can shape your strength later. So stay curious and open to learning, even when it’s hard.

Who at BCS inspired you?

Mrs. Wiley was one of the first people who truly believed in me. She challenged me to look at my struggles not as setbacks, but as stepping stones. She had a way of holding high expectations while still making you feel seen and supported. Her belief that I could achieve my goals, even when I wasn’t so sure, stuck with me. I still carry her voice with me today when I’m encouraging my own students to push forward.

What was your favorite memory from your time at BCS?

Senior night is still one of my favorite memories. After the football game, my friends and I had a bonfire. It was one of those rare nights where we had the opportunity to reminisce. It felt like we knew we were closing one chapter and stepping into something new, but we got to do it together.

What was your favorite meal in the cafeteria?

Salad Bar
