Susan Insley-Alumni Spotlight
In this week's Alumni Spotlight, we're catching up with alumna Susan Insley

What are you doing now?
I was fortunate to have the love and support of my parents as I attended and graduated from The Ohio State University in 1967, taught American History and Government at Westerville HS, worked for US Representative Clarence J Brown, obtained a law degree from Ohio Northern University, practiced law and became a Partner at The Vorys Law Firm, then joined Honda as Vice President Corporate Planning and later became Senior Vice President of Honda’s Anna Engine Plant and later served as a consultant to various businesses. I was privileged to serve as a member and Chair of the Ohio Northern University Board of Trustees and The Ohio State University Hospitals Board, as well as serving on several corporate boards. I spent happy years married to Don Penny and made my home in Florida—though my heart will always be close to Bellefontaine and my family.
How did BCS prepare you for this role?
I was privileged to learn from truly great teachers who helped prepare me academically, socially and ethically — I especially remember Miss Chiles from Susie Parker School who never raised her voice; Paul Watkins who encouraged a lifelong interest in reading, Edward Bewley who instilled a love of history and what we can learn from our past, Grace Otte who encouraged academic excellence.
What is your advice for current Chieftains?
Enjoy your time in high school, make the most of your opportunities, respect your teachers and your schoolmates.
Who at BCS inspired you?
As noted earlier, I think particularly of Miss Chiles, Mr. Watkins, Mr. Bewley and Miss Otte.
What was your favorite memory from your time at BCS?
Cheering for the Chieftains, being inducted into the National Honor Society.
What was your favorite meal in the cafeteria?
I lived across the street from BHS so I went home for lunch!
